Wednesday 30th September 2009
Today we finally came to the conclusion of what pop song to use for our music video coursework 'So Simple' by Stacie Orrico, I came across this song a while ago and thought it would be perfect as we were looking for a female pop artist that has lyrics with a similar message to Natasha Bedingfield and that would allow us to creatively play around with visuals and style, we couldn't be happier. In addition to the success of finding the song we found our model / actress to play the role of Stacie Orrico which was a great relief as this was a tough struggle to begin with. The reason we chose Emelie Grant to be our artist is because she had studied GCSE drama at school previously and therefor would have the ability to preform and become this character my partner and I are attempting to create.

Researched songs & Make up ideas from the 'Pop' genre
Wednesday 23rd September 2009
In today's lesson we had selected our genre as 'pop' and started to research songs which fall into this particular genre. While also bearing in mind the costume and make up styles used in order to create that Star persona.
While researching and looking through many female artist's pop music videos we came across Pink's video 'You and your hand' and found this clip and were completely inspired by the feminine Lacy almost floral body suit she is wearing.

My partner and I particularly liked the number of costume and hair changes Pink makes in her video as this is perhaps an attempt to show the variation of women who struggle with the same issues of men who treat them badly.

As a whole, my partner and I were truly inspired by this video and definitely decided to incorporate some of the conventions and creative features somehow into our own music video.
Alongside the Pink 'You and your hand' video I particularly liked the use of style and exaggerated make up in Natasha Bedingfield's video 'I bruise easily' as it shows how make up can be used and seen as a barrier to the real individual who hides behind all the various layers of it.

Goodwin's Theory and 'Pop' Characteristics
Monday 21st September 2009
Today I researched Goodwin's theory and also looked at characteristics of 'pop' music.
Andrew Goodwin has identified a number of key features which distinguish the music video as a form:
- There is a relationship between the lyrics and the visuals, with the visuals illustrating, amplifying or contradicting the lyrics.
- There is a relationship between the music and the visuals, with the visuals illustrating, amplifying or contradicting the music.
- Genres are complex and diverse in terms of music video style and iconography
- Record companies will demand a lot of close-ups of the main artist or vocalist
- Voyeurism is present in many music videos, especially in the treatment of females, but also in terms of systems of looking. Some examples are screens within screens, cameras, mirrors, etc.
- there are likely to be inter textual references, either to other music videos or to films and TV texts, these provide further gratification and pleasure for the viewers/fans.
Characteristics
Musicologists often identify the following characteristics as typical of the pop music genre
• a focus on the individual song or singles, rather than on extended works or albums
• an aim of appealing to a general audience, rather than to a particular sub-culture or ideology
• an emphasis on craftsmanship rather than formal "artistic" qualities
• an emphasis on recording, production, and technology, over live performance
• a tendency to reflect existing trends rather than progressive developments
• much pop music is intended to encourage dancing, or it uses dance-oriented beats or rhythms
The main medium of pop music is the song, often between two and a half and three and a half minutes in length, generally marked by a consistent and noticeable rhythmic element, a mainstream style and a simple traditional structure.[18] Common variants include the verse-chorus form and the thirty-two-bar form, with a focus on melodies and catchy hooks, and a chorus that contrasts melodically, rhythmically and harmonically with the verse.[19] The beat and the melodies tend to be simple, with limited harmonic accompaniment.[20] The lyrics of modern pop songs typically focus on simple themes – often love and romantic relationships – although there are notable exceptions.[15]

Researched various genres
Friday 18th September 2009
In today's lesson, my partner and I started researching the various music genres and then later chose to narrowed it down to the genre 'pop'. We knew from the beginning we wanted to use a female artist and as 'pop' music originates from the abbreviation 'popular' music we thought this was perfect as this is after all a promotional video that we want as many to see as possible.

Researching influential Music Videos
Wednesday 16th September 2009
In today's lesson as a class we watched and analysed some of the most influential music videos ever and two of them being, Madonna's 'Erotica'(1992) and Elvis Presley's 'Jail house rock'(1957)
We noticed Madonna's controversial video had a number of references to sexuality shown through costume and of course activity which at the time and perhaps even till now are seen as taboo subjects. Yet, as a class we noticed similarities between Madonna and new artist 'Lady Gaga' which already proves the power and influence music has over people.
Elvis Presley's video 'Jail house rock' clearly shows how music videos have evolved over time yet still was a great product of its time. During the video the inmates are rebelling against the prison guards which gives the indication that the rock genre is of perhaps a rather rebellious nature and the target audience of this genre expect rebellious acts from an artist from the genre.
